The Kano State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with Plan International, a UK-funded program, to address the out-of-school children phenomenon in the state.

Commissioner of Education, Dr. Ali Haruna Makoda, emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to tackle the issue.

*The partnership aims to develop the entire education system and provide support to the state’s efforts in improving education.

Dr. Makoda noted that out-of-school children are a common phenomenon in Nigeria, requiring joint efforts to address.

The state government has established a committee to develop strategies for addressing the root causes of out-of-school children, including poverty and child labor.

Earlier, the Country Director Plan International Mr. Charles Usie said his team was at the Commissioner’s office to extend words of appreciation for the cordial working relationship that exists between Plan international and Kano State Government.

He explained that Plan International is implementing Accelerating Basic Education Program (ABEP) in Kano, Sokoto, and Jigawa states, targeting 324,000 out-of-school children aged 10-18.

Charles said the program provides non-formal education and vocational skills training to help children transition back to formal education or acquire employable skills.

The targeted local government areas piloting the project in Kano, according to the project Country Director include Nasarawa, Kumbotso, Gwale, Tudun Wada, and Rimin Gado.

“I have been to some of these areas to see how the program is taking place and we want to hear from you other areas that you may need our interventions ” said Charles.

Approximately, about 60,000 children will receive vocational skills training to provide alternative pathways for those not interested in secondary or tertiary education under the ABEP program.
