Kano, The Kano State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to youth rehabilitation and improved security through strategic investments in education and non-kinetic interventions.
Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano State stated this at the 65th Independence Anniversary Lecture in Kano on Monday.
Yusuf, represented by his Chief of Staff, Dr. Suleiman Sani, said that his administration was utilising education as a powerful tool to reintegrate repentant youths and curb crime.
The governor highlighted the government’s flagship security strategy, the Safe Corridor Initiative, also known as The Kano Model, which targets political thuggery, phone snatching, drug abuse, and other forms of youth restiveness across the state.
He said that the programme underscores the administration’s commitment to peace, development, and social justice.
Yusuf urged Kano people to sustain their support for government policies and encouraged eligible voters to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) in preparation for future elections.
The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, said that the initiative offers de-radicalisation, psychosocial support, rehabilitation, empowerment, among others.
According to Yusuf, the initiative has been implemented in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA)
He said that the police arrested between 50 to 70 youths weekly for drug-related offences, while the NDLEA recorded 1,345 drug suspects in 2024.
The event was attended by representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, civil society groups, public school students and government functionaries.
