Kano Education Sector Joint Steering Committee Meets to Review Progress and Outline New Steps

The Kano State Education Sector Joint Steering Committee held a two-day meeting in Kaduna to review progress reports on basic education initiatives. The meeting brought together stakeholders to address challenges facing the education sector.

Commissioner of Education Alhaji Umar Haruna Doguwa highlighted the state government’s commitment to implementing the 14-point education reform agenda. 

The meeting aimed to discuss progress, deliberate on recommendations from the Kano Education Recovery Conference, and outline next steps.

Key outcomes include:

– Dissemination of findings from the 2023 Annual Education Sector Performance Review

– Briefing on the Haske Basic Education for Integrated Qur’anic Schools Pilot

– Agreement on next steps, including massive school enrollment, distribution of instructional materials, and reopening of boarding schools

– Plans to provide upkeep allowances, furniture, and school uniforms to enhance the learning environment

Dr. Yusuf Ibrahim Kofar Mata, Commissioner for Higher Education, announced plans to upgrade technical education in state tertiary institutions.

 The meeting reviewed the education crisis response plan framework, covering access to quality education, almajiri and alternative education, girl-child education, teacher development, and curriculum development.

The meeting was attended by representatives from the Kano State House of Assembly, Kano Emirate Council, development partners, MDAs, and civil societies.
