Kano, The Kano State Government says it requires about N60 billion to purchase furniture for the 4.5 million primary and secondary school students presently receiving lessons on bare floors.
The News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN) reports that the state Commissioner of Education, Alhaji Umar Doguwa, disclosed this while speaking with newsmen in Kano on Thursday.
Doguwa blamed the decay in the state’s education sector on the immediate past administration of Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, which he claimed destroyed a well-functioning system it inherited from his predecessor, Sen.Rabiu Kwankwaso.
He also alleged that the closure of some schools by the previous administration contributed to the deterioration of the education infrastructure.
He revealed that the state has 10,000 schools with 7 million students, out of whom 4.5 million are learning on bare floors.
The commissioner commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for declaring a State of Emergency on education and increasing the sector’s budget by about 30 percent.
He expressed the government’s readiness to revive the education sector and make Kano “a hub of learning.”
He said plans were underway to implement the education policy, starting with the New Girls Science and Technical College, formally known as Governor’s College, Kano, through the provision of instructional materials and renovation of dilapidated infrastructure.
