Kano wins silvers, bronzes at 22nd National Sports Festival

Kano State Weight lifters have won two silver and three bronze medals in the ongoing 22nd edition of National Sport’s Festival tagged:”Gateway Games” currently taking place in Abeokuta, Ogun state.
Kano’s Temmidayo Jegede won two silver and one bronze medal in the 55kg women while Adams Ayinmba also won two bronze medal in the 49kg women.
In the football, Kano state football team has won one match against Kwara 2-1 and walked over Ondo state team Tuesday morning at Remo Stars stadium.
In the handball, Kano state handball team lost 24-25 points to Niger state.
Speaking with newsmen, the acting chairman of Kano state sports commission, Ibrahim Umar Fagge FIFA described the performance of the state athletes as very encouraging, charging them to continue to redouble efforts in order to win more medals for the state.
Ibrahim Umar Fagge FIFA said that the commission under his leadership are working round the clock to ensure the success of the state.
While commending Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the state commissioner of youth and sports, Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso as well as other key stakeholders for their unflinching support.
It would recalled that the 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival, tagged: “Gateway Games 2025,” was officially declared open on Sunday, May 18, at the MKO Abiola International Stadium in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The opening ceremony, rich in color, culture, and celebration, marked the commencement of Nigeria’s biggest sporting event.
Originally slated for November 2024, the festival faced several postponements before finally kicking off in May 2025. Vice President Kashim Shettima formally opened the event, joined by a host of dignitaries including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, ex-governors Segun Osoba and Gbenga Daniel, and former House Speaker Dimeji Bankole.
Over 10,000 athletes from across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory are competing in 33 sports. A special feature this year is the Invited Junior Athletes (IJA) team, showcasing emerging talents and future stars.
Governor Dapo Abiodun expressed confidence in Ogun State’s preparedness, citing major infrastructural improvements and cultural readiness for the historic event. He emphasized the role of the festival in promoting unity, sportsmanship, and youth development.
