Kano State Primary School Headmasters Call for Perimeter Fencing to Boost Security

By Aminu Garko

Headmasters of primary schools in Kano State are urging the state government to provide perimeter fencing to protect their schools from theft and trespassing.

During a visit by the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) to assess the progress of the state’s education sector emergency declaration, headmasters expressed concerns about the lack of fencing.

” The absence of perimeter fencing has exposed schools to theft, with valuables being stolen from Dawakin Tofa Modern Primary School and Garindau Central Primary School.

“Trespassing is also a significant issue, with residents disrupting lessons at Chula Central Primary School by driving through the school with loud vehicles.

“A minimum fence height of 2.0 meters is recommended to prevent climbing.

“Mesh fencing with horizontal wires of at least 4.5mm thickness and vertical wires of at least 3.75mm thickness is suggested.

“Increasing the number of security guards is essential, as schools with only one security personnel are vulnerable to theft.

“Access control and limited points of entry can also enhance security.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf declared a state of emergency in the education sector in June, aiming to revamp the sector and address critical challenges.

The headmasters’ requests align with this initiative, emphasizing the need for secure learning environments.
