Kano – July 6, 2026 – Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has called on media practitioners to uphold professionalism, ethics and patriotism in promoting accountability, transparency and national development.

Yusuf made the call on Monday while declaring open the Arewa Media Summit in Kano.

This was contained in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

The governor described the summit as a timely platform for journalists, broadcasters, filmmakers, digital content creators, academics and policymakers to exchange ideas on strengthening governance and public trust.

He said the theme, “Government, Citizens: Accountability, Responsibility and Ethical Media Practice,” reflects the critical role of the media in sustaining democracy and fostering constructive engagement between government and the people.

“A well-informed citizenry remains the foundation of every democratic society. The media has a constitutional responsibility to educate the public, promote transparency and hold leaders accountable through factual, balanced and responsible reporting,” Yusuf said.

He urged media professionals to verify information before publication and to avoid misinformation, sensationalism and divisive narratives capable of undermining national unity.

The governor also called for stronger collaboration between government, the media and citizens, saying responsible journalism and access to credible information are indispensable to good governance and sustainable development.

Yusuf reaffirmed the commitment of the Kano State Government to promoting ethical journalism and supporting initiatives that strengthen public communication and citizens’ engagement.

He commended the organisers of the Arewa Media Summit for creating a platform for dialogue on the future of the media and its role in national development.
