Kano, The Police Command in Kano State has assured residents of elaborate security measures to guarantee hitch-free New Year celebrations in the state.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Hussaini Gumel, gave the assurance in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria( NAN) in Kano on Sunday.

Gumel said that security measures already in place would enable residents observe the celebration without threats to lives and property.

He explained that Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers across the 44 local government areas of the state have been directed to contain any form of security threat to residents in their respective areas of supervision.
He charged officers to engage in critical assessment of threat prone areas, thorough stop and search, raids on black spots and other anti-crime strategies capable of sustaining peace and public safety in the state.

He also warned personnel deployed to be professional and mindful of the fundamental human rights of citizens in the discharge of their responsibilities with all sense of decorum and alertness.

He explained that security measures were taken due to the peculiar nature of the state as a hub for economic activities that would experience a significant influx of people during the festive period.

He said the command has deployed specialised units to provide required security at recreational centres, places of worships and public building to guarantee lives and property.

“We would intensify efforts through targeted operations and surveillance to pre-empt and neutralise any criminal activities.

“We also appeal to members of the general public to cooperate and offer useful intelligence reports to our officers deployed in and out side the state to enhance peaceful coexistence among residents,” Gumel said.

He however solicited the support of traditional rulers, religion leaders and other stakeholders in mobilising residents to offer intelligence information on movement of bad elements in their mists for prompt action.

The commissioner of police said that such information would enable the officers and men fashion out detailed security arrangements.
