Kano, The Police Commissioner in Kano State, Hussaini Gumel on Thursday urged the leaders of the Tijjanniya, Qadiriya, Shiite and Izala sects as well as the Christian Association of Nigeria( CAN) to preach against any form of violence in the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN) reports that Gumel spoke when he visited the leaders of sects.
He urged them to use their positive impact to preach what would shape public opinions and disseminate key messages that would ensure peace and order in the state.
The commissioner also admonished the religious leaders not to allow themselves to be used by anybody to disrupt the peace being enjoyed in the state, especially when the state awaits the Supreme Court ruling and the forthcoming Christmas and New Year festive periods.
He said the objective of the visit was to urge the leaders to reach out to their followers to get credible intelligence information that could aid the police in confronting any form of security threats in the state.
The commissioner said that this would enable the residents to move on with their legitimate businesses without any let or hindrance.
Gumel said, “We will not relent in our efforts to deal with any persons or groups of people threatening the peaceful coexistence our state was known for.
” All forms of criminal activities will be curbed if the residents volunteer credible information to the police on any suspicious persons or acts in their environment.
” We will enhance community policing to enable residents to come forward with intelligence information that will aid us in apprehending criminal elements.
“Our primary role is to secure the lives and property of residents and we have set in motion security modalities that will deal with any form of security threats.”
The CP, while appreciating the religious leaders for their prayers, support and cooperation, appealed to them to sustain their efforts in bolstering peace and development of the state.
In their responses,Pof. Musa Borodo, the Shura Committee of Tijjaniyya led by Khalifa Sani Shehu-Mai Hula, Gidan Qadiriyya led by Sheikh Qaribullah Nasiru-Kabara and CAN led by the Chairman, Kano State Chapter, Bishop John Namaza, appreciated Gumel for finding them worthy of this visit.
They commended the efforts of the command in tackling the security challenges especially the disturbing trend of mobile phones snatching and armed robbery by the application of non-kinetic approach.
The leaders vowed, “We will fully mobilise our members to volunteer information on any persons or groups of persons with dubious motives to the nearest security agencies for prompt action.
” We are assuring CP Gumel of our maximum cooperation for the overall peace and stability of Kano State.”
