Abuja – July 30, 2026 – National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, David Mark, has expressed sorrow over the death of former Minister of Finance, Abubakar Alhaji, describing him as one of the finest public servants to have served Nigeria.

This was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by Kola Ologbondiyan, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the ADC National Chairman.

Mark recalled that they served together in the administration of former Military President Ibrahim Babangida, where Alhaji was Minister of Finance while he was Minister of Communications.

He said Alhaji’s tenure was marked by professionalism, integrity, fiscal discipline and commitment to the nation’s economic development.

“Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji was a patriot in every sense of the word. He brought exceptional competence, wisdom and honesty to public service. His contributions to Nigeria’s economic management remain remarkable and enduring,” Mark stated.

The former Senate President noted that beyond his accomplishments in government, the late elder statesman was a humble and selfless leader who devoted his life to the service of the nation and humanity.

Mark said Nigeria had lost one of its most experienced administrators and a voice of reason whose counsel was always guided by national interest.

He extended condolences to the Alhaji family, the Government and people of Sokoto State, and all Nigerians over the loss.

Mark prayed to Allah to forgive the shortcomings of the deceased, grant him Aljannatul Firdaus, and comfort his family and loved ones.
