The Singer Market Development Association (SIMDA) has urged Dangote and BUA sugar companies to lower the soaring price of sugar in Nigeria.
Despite being produced locally, the price of sugar has remained high since the announcement of the fuel subsidy removal and new exchange rate policy.
Junaidu Muhammad Zakari, Chairman of SIMDA, stated that there is no justification for the high price of sugar, considering the stabilizing exchange rate and local production.
He noted that while prices of other commodities are decreasing, sugar prices remain high, and urged the producers to take action, especially with the approaching Ramadan season.
Zakari commended the Federal Government’s interventions, including waivers for importation of rice, pasta, and noodles, which have contributed to the decrease in prices of these items.
He appealed to the government to create a competitive environment for more food processing companies, develop agriculture, and improve security to enable farmers to cultivate their land without fear.
