Infrastructural Development: A Top Priority for Kano State Government

Since assuming office on May 29, 2023, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has made the development of infrastructure a cornerstone of his administration, aiming to uplift Kano State through comprehensive infrastructural improvements.

One of the administration’s key initiatives has been the rehabilitation and construction of roads across the state. This effort is not only aimed at improving transportation but also at unlocking the vast economic potential of rural areas by enhancing connectivity.

A major priority under Governor Yusuf’s leadership is the rehabilitation of the Challawa Gorge Dam. Once completed, this project is expected to provide Kano metropolis with a reliable supply of clean and hygienic water. Additionally, it is intended to complement the hydroelectric power generated by the Tiga Dam, supporting both domestic and industrial electricity needs. This, in turn, is anticipated to spur economic growth and prosperity throughout the state.

The government has also revalidated contracts for the construction of 20 solar-powered boreholes across Kano, further ensuring access to clean water. In parallel, Governor Yusuf has embarked on the construction and rehabilitation of several key roads that link rural communities, including the Madobi-Yako-Kafin Maiyaki road, Yako-Kiru road, and the completion of the Gwarzo-Tsaure-Tsanyawa road, among many others.

It is also a land mark achievement on the ongoing unrban renewal of Kano metropolis through the construction of an underpath at Kofar Dan Agundi and the one along Aminu Kano Way meant to ease traffic congestion and facilitate free flow of traffic smoothly and uninterruptedly. The dualisation of Lodge Road and others makes the initiative more glaring.

Another critical area in the rehabilitation of roads that needs attention is the rehabilitation of roads within Kano’s industrial layouts, such as Bompai, Sharada, Challawa, and Tokarawa. These areas are currently in a state of disrepair, and improving the infrastructure there is crucial for boosting the morale of industrialists, who play a vital role in job creation and wealth generation. Enhanced infrastructure in these industrial zones will also increase the state’s capacity to generate internal revenue through taxes and rates.

Meeting the energy needs of Kano’s industries is another strategic priority. Ensuring a stable power supply will attract much-needed investment into the industrial sector, aiding in the revival of closed and struggling industries. The reindustrialization of Kano is central to the administration’s economic strategy, as the industrial sector’s contribution to economic growth is significant.

Governor Yusuf’s administration is deeply committed to restoring Kano to its former status as the fastest-growing economy in Northern Nigeria and a hub for commerce and entrepreneurship. Efforts to strengthen relationships with international partners, such as the outreach to the Qatar Ambassador, as well as initiatives to engage with the Bank of Industry (BOI), reflect this commitment.

It is crucial that the state government supports closed, moribund, and underperforming industries in Kano by helping them bridge their financing gaps, particularly through access to BOI funding. Currently, the bank’s loan portfolio is skewed toward industries in other states, placing those in Kano at a disadvantage due to stringent lending conditions.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration is undoubtedly dedicated to taking Kano to new heights. By resuscitating and revitalizing the state’s manufacturing sector, the administration aims to achieve its goals of job creation, wealth generation, and restoring Kano’s greatness.
