These headlines aim to convey the main idea of the original text, which is that a group (NIWA) is raising awareness and educating people who use boats and waterways about safety measures to prevent accidents.
Kano, The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has urged the public to adhere to safety protocols when using waterways.
This call was made by Alhaji Maude Nasir, Manager of NIWA’s Kano State Area Office, during a one-day sensitization programme on safety for boat operators, fishermen, farmers, passengers, and stakeholders.
Nasir emphasized that NIWA’s main objectives are to regulate, manage, and control the use of inland waterways. He attributed the recent boat mishap in Kauran Mata, Madobi Local Government Area, to overloading and nighttime travel.
The sensitization program, themed “Zero Tolerance to Boat Mishap on Nigerian Inland Waters,” aims to reduce and prevent mishaps.
Nasir stressed that safety on inland waterways differs from land safety and urged boat operators to ensure their facilities are in good condition before operation.
He advised operators and passengers to always wear life jackets, which have features to enable users in emergency situations.
Nasir assured that NIWA would do everything possible to minimize boat mishaps across the country.
Stakeholders, including Alhaji Abubakar Rabo Abdulkarim, emphasized the importance of waterways and called for proper management to maximize benefits.
Malam Sunusi Dayyabu and Engr Baffa Bello Gaya, thanked NIWA for the sensitization program and appealed to the public to apply what they learned for safety purposes.
