Kano, An NGO, War Against Injustice (WAI), says it has shelve its participation in the nation wide protests against the economic hardship in the country due to security concerns in Kano State.

The Executive Director War Against Injustice, Umar Ibrahim-Umar, announced the suspension at a press conference on Wednesday in Kano.

“We had planned to hold a peaceful rally to express our concerns about the state of our nation, but due to security concerns in Kano State, we were forced to abandon those plans.

“The decision to not hold the rally was not taken lightly. We were forced to prioritize the safety and security of our members and the good people of the state.

“The criminal elements and bad eggs

who have hijacked our streets and roads protests, violating our right to peaceful assenbly, have made it impossible for us to exercise our constitutional rights”

He said they took this decision in the best interest of the people of Kano, for peace, and security, and to

save lives and property.

“Instead of taking to the streets, we have organized this press conference, online protests, and stakeholder engagement to present our demands to our leaders. 

“We are giving the government three months ultimatum to observe the changes we demamd and If, after 3 months, we do not see significant progress.

“We will organise a peaceful protest which will be a Kano-owned-based

peaceful protest” Ibrahim-Umar said

The Executive Director appealed to the government to end poverty,hunger, unemployment and reduce school for  all Nigerians.

“We demand good governance and accountability, decent wages for workers, inclusive and participatory governance.

“We demand improved security, freedom of expression and press, eradication of corruption, and strengthening value of naira among others” he said

Ibrahim-Umar urged the government to ensure smooth operation of Dangote refinary and rehabilitation of government owned refinaries to reduce reliance on importing fuel and promote economic growth.
