“Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has sounded the alarm on the crisis facing the state’s education sector, revealing that his administration inherited a system in shambles. Upon taking office in May 2023, he found:

  • 4.7 million pupils sitting on bare floors in primary schools
  • 400 schools with only one teacher for all classes and subjects
  • Schools being converted into commercial premises, with classrooms demolished to make way for shops
  • A severe lack of instructional materials, leaving teachers and students to struggle with outdated resources

Governor Yusuf declared a state of emergency in education, vowing to take radical but practical measures to reposition the sector. He lamented the proliferation of out-of-school children, with a staggering 989,234 children currently out of school.

The Governor’s declaration was made in the presence of dignitaries, including Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso and former Governor Donald Duke. With the full support of the National Union of Teachers (NUT), Governor Yusuf is committed to addressing the pressing need to revamp the education sector and ensure quality education for all.”
