Dawakin Tofa (Kano State),The Dawanau International Grains Market traders association, Kano, has donated grains worth over N10 million for distribution to the needy in Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area of the state.
The President of the association, Alhaji Muntaka Isah, said this while presenting the food items to the council Chairman, Dr Kabiru Danguguwa, in Kano on Friday.
Isah said the gesture was meant to cushion the effects of the economic hardships being faced by the people in the area.
He said the donation included beans, rice, millet and maize.
Isah appealed to the Local Government Council to expedite action in ensuring that the grains reached the needy.
In his remarks, Danguguwa, represented by the council Vice-Chairman, Alhaji Ahmed Chedi, thanked the traders for the gesture and assured of the council’s commitment in ensuring that the grains reached the intended targets.
“There will be no discrimination during the distribution of these grains, provided you are from Dawakin Tofa Local Government and you are among the needy.
“The gesture will be extended to you irrespective of the political party you belong,” he said.
The chairman appealed to wealthy individuals and philanthropists to emulate the traders by extending such gestures to the needy.
NAN reports that Dawanau is the biggest grains market in the West African sub-region supplying grains to such countries as Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Bourkina Faso, Cameroon and the Central African Republic.
The grains being supplied from the market included sorghum, millet, maize, rice, beans and soybeans.
The market also supplies the World Food Programme (WFP) accounting for 80 to 85 per cent of the foodstuff the programme supplies to IDP camps across Nigeria.
