Yusuf sets up panel to investigate student’s death in Kano college

Kano, Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano State has approved the constitution of an administrative investigation committee to probe the circumstances surrounding the death of a student of St. Louis College, Kano.
According to a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin Tofa, the committee will be chaired by the Commissioner for Education, Gwani Alhaji Ali Makoda.
Members include Barr. Aminu Hussain, Special Adviser on Justice and Constitutional Matters; Barr. Hamza Dantani; Baba Abubakar Umar, Executive Secretary of the Private and Voluntary Institutions Management Board; Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Director General of Media and Publicity; Imam Ahmed Zubairu, proprietor of private schools; the PTA chairman of St. Louis College;
Others are Hafsat Aminu Adhama, Senior Special Assistant on Girl Child Education, who will serve as secretary; and Binta Abdullahi Mukhtar, Under Secretary/REPA, as assistant secretary.
The committee is tasked with conducting an independent investigation into the incident, establishing a timeline of events, and identifying any lapses in supervision, welfare management, or institutional procedures.
Its terms of reference include reviewing the events leading to the student’s death, examining medical records and reports, investigating the social environment within the college, and assessing allegations of bullying, coercion, or unauthorised disciplinary practices.
The panel will also evaluate complaint and reporting mechanisms, review staff compliance with supervision guidelines, and recommend reforms to disciplinary and boarding school management systems.
The committee will further propose measures to strengthen emergency medical response and student safety standards across schools in the state.
Governor Yusuf said his administration is committed to establishing the truth and taking steps to prevent a recurrence. He directed members to carry out their assignment with fairness, diligence, and professionalism, and to submit their findings and recommendations within the stipulated timeframe.(
