Fallout from UBEC Northwest sports competitions

The just concluded UBEC Northwest sports competition for inter primary schools boys and girls has generated a lot of concerns in the organisation of the tournaments.
The three days tournaments was attracted six states namely: Kaduna, Kano, Zamfara, Katsina, Sokoto and the host state Jigawa in attendance only Kebbi state contingent failed to show up.
The national headquarter of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) under Hajia Aisha Garba bankrolled the competitions which each of the geo political zones are expected to produce the winners and runners up as their representatives in the national final scheduled to hold later in the year in Abuja.
The tournaments which is being organized in conjunction with the Nigerian School Sports Federation (NSSF) as the major stakeholders as far as sports competitions was concerned in the country to ensure transparency, and prudent in the organisations.
While other centres were commended for a job well done, judging their commitment and hard working in providing all the necessary logistics and perfect as well as colourful organisation.
But the Dutse centre recorded poor organisation which as a result of that many athletes went back home with malaria infections
due to the lack of electricity supply for almost two days in their rooms, no fumigations as well as dilapidated and unmarked pitches, and inadequate officiating officials of the matches from the commencement of the competitions at Dutse NYSC orientation camp, the venue of the event.
Investigations conducted learnt that some members of the local organizing committee deserted the venue of the events immediately they received their full allowances and leaving the LOC chairman alone throughout the competitions.
In the future, the national headquarter of UBEC should look critically select and involve relevant stakeholders in each of the centre towards the smooth and successful organisation.
Although, the head of the monitoring team from National UBEC, Mrs. Esther Oshiomoba had to sermon an emergency meeting with the state LOC in order to address some challenges and improve the organisation of the championship.
