Bayero University to Host 49th Soil Science Society of Nigeria

Bayero University in Kano will host the 49th Annual Conference of the Soil Science Society of Nigeria (SSSN) from April 8 to 11, 2025.
This marks the first time in 47 years that the conference will be held in Kano, highlighting the significance of the event ¹.
The conference theme is “Promoting Soil Health and Resilience Through Research and Innovation for Sustainable Development.
” The primary goal is to explore ways to improve soil science practices, enhance crop yields, and mitigate agricultural losses.
Improving Soil Management Practices*: Creating strategies for sustainable agricultural growth through better soil management.
Fostering advancements in soil science to improve food security nationwide.
Collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to research and disseminate vital information on effective soil utilization and fertilizer application.
The conference will feature sessions on various sub-themes, including,Land Resource Assessment and Management, Soil survey and mapping, land resource and soil information systems, and sustainable land use.
Soil Health and Nutrient Management: Soil chemistry and fertility assessment, organic matter and soil carbon sequestration, and biotechnology and nutrient management.
Soil Physics and Conservation Soil physical properties and their impact on crop growth, soil conservation and erosion control measures, and water management.
Capacity Building and Extension: Training and education programs for soil scientists, farmers, and extension services for disseminating soil science knowledge.
Cross-Cutting and Advances in Soil Science Research: Emerging technologies in soil science, precision agriculture, and site-specific management.
Recognition and Participation
Prominent Nigerians will be recognized for their contributions to soil health, including Governor of Borno State, Prof. Baba Gana Zulum, and State Minister of Agriculture, Senator Aliyu Sabi, who will receive membership awards from the society.
The conference invites researchers, policymakers, and agricultural practitioners to participate and offer innovative solutions to strengthen Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
