Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has made an urgent appeal to the Federal Government to provide assistance to flood victims in Tangaza and Illela, local government areas in the state.
The devastating flood has destroyed hundreds of houses and farmlands, leaving many people homeless and causing food shortages in the affected communities .
This year’s flooding has impacted 22 local government areas, with Tangaza and Illela being the worst hit.
Governor Aliyu emphasized the importance of federal intervention, citing the significant economic importance of the two LGAs, which border Niger Republic.
He warned that without aid, these communities may face severe food shortages and socioeconomic crises ¹.
The governor also urged residents to take preventive measures, such as evacuating drainages and avoiding indiscriminate refuse dumping.
He encouraged communities to view the disaster as an act of God and prayed for prevention of future occurrences.
This appeal comes amid concerns about flooding nationwide. In fact, a recent report highlighted that 148 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in 31 states are high flood-risk areas, while 249 LGAs in 36 states and the FCT fall within moderate flood-risk areas .
The Federal Government has sought support from international organizations like UNESCO to address flooding and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) issues.
Similarly, other states, such as Kogi, have also requested emergency intervention from the Federal Government to combat flooding ⁴.
