New Law Reinstates Sanusi as Emir of Kano, Dethrones Bayero and Four Others

By Aminu Garko

A new law passed by the Kano State House of Assembly on Thursday, May 23, has technically dethroned Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero as Emir of Kano and reinstated Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of Kano.

The law, which recognizes Sanusi as the Emir of Kano, has led to the removal of Bayero’s portrait from the Coronation Hall of Government House, Kano, and replaced it with Sanusi’s portrait, signaling his return to the palace.

The Kano State Emirate Council Law 2024, which was amended by the House of Assembly, states that all traditional office holders and title holders elevated or appointed under the repealed Principal Law of December 5, 2019, shall revert to their previous positions.

The law also mandates the Commissioner responsible for Local Government to oversee the transitional arrangements, including the handling of assets and liabilities of the abolished emirates.

According to sources, Governor Abba Yusuf is expected to give assent to the proposed amendment law and make announcements shortly.

Meanwhile, Aminu Bayero has reportedly fled the palace and Kano, and is currently in Ilorin.

Sanusi’s appointment as Emir of Kano has already been written, and he is expected to be officially reinstated soon.

Sanusi, the 14th Emir of Kano, was removed on March 9, 2020, by outgoing Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, who was then the deputy governor when Sanusi was installed.

The Ganduje administration had also created four new emirates, making it five First Class Emirs, but the present state Assembly has abolished all the new emirates created by Ganduje.
