Kano – July 6, 2026 – Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has called on state governments across Nigeria to emulate the state’s Special Reporters Initiative, describing it as an innovative model for strengthening government communication and public enlightenment.
Yusuf made the call on Monday while speaking at the Arewa Media Summit in Kano.
This was contained in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
The governor said Kano is the first state in the country to establish the positions of Senior Special Reporters and Special Reporters to improve communication between government and the people.
He said the initiative currently engages more than 150 young men and women deployed across ministries, departments, agencies and the 44 local government areas of the state.
According to him, the Special Reporters are responsible for documenting and publicising the developmental programmes and achievements of the Federal and Kano State governments, as well as enlightening citizens on government policies.
Yusuf said the initiative has improved the dissemination of government information, strengthened citizens’ participation in governance, and created employment opportunities for young people.
He described effective communication as an essential component of good governance, adding that timely and credible information helps build public confidence and encourages civic participation.
The governor urged other sub-national governments to adopt similar initiatives to strengthen public engagement, improve access to credible information and support national development.
He reaffirmed the Kano State Government’s commitment to policies and programmes that promote responsible communication, transparency and inclusive governance.
