Kano – June 22, 2026 – Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has approved the renaming of Dawakin Tofa General Hospital to Dr Mahmud Baffa Yola General Hospital.
The decision was announced in a statement by the governor’s spokesperson Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa on Monday.
Yusuf said the renaming was to immortalise the late elder statesman for his contributions to community development and public service in Kano State.
He noted that Yola was among the pioneers of adult education in Kano, a programme that expanded learning opportunities for thousands of citizens. In 1989, Yola also initiated a community fund-raising campaign that led to the establishment of the hospital in Dawakin Tofa.
Yusuf described him as a patriotic leader whose legacy of selfless service continues to inspire.
The governor directed the Ministry of Health to commence the approved renovation of the hospital and assess its equipment needs to improve healthcare delivery.
He said the facility serves Dawakin Tofa, Rimingado, Tofa, Bagwai and neighbouring local government areas, and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure across Kano.
