Abuja – June 25, 2026 – The Senate on Wednesday passed the State Police Bill for second reading during an emergency sitting.
The executive bill seeks to amend the constitution to provide a legal framework for the establishment of State Police Services, and to grant sub-national governments greater responsibility for security within their jurisdictions.
When enacted, the legislation would empower state governments to play a more active role in policing and internal security administration.
During the session, the Senate suspended parts of its standing rules to admit members of the executive, including the Governors of Ondo and Kaduna States, the Chief of Staff to the President, and other senior government officials.
The bill, when passed by the National Assembly, will be transmitted to the 36 State Houses of Assembly for ratification. Constitutional requirements mandate approval by at least two-thirds of the state assemblies before it becomes law.
