Obasanjo in Kano as Emir Sanusi turbans Mahmoud, Dikko-Umar

Kano – June 26, 2026 – Former Head of State, Olusegun Obasanjo, was in Kano on Friday for the turbaning of Abubakar Balarabe-Mahmoud SAN as Garkuwan Kano and Air Marshal Mohammad Dikko-Umar, retired, as Sarkin Fulanin Ja’idanawa Kano by the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.

Sanusi said the two traditional titles were conferred on merit in recognition of the recipients’ loyalty, devotion, and consistent support for the emirate, qualities he noted they inherited from their forefathers.

Speaking on Dikko-Umar, the emir said the title of Sarkin Fulanin Ja’idanawa was passed down to him through his late father. He cited Dikko-Umar’s service in the Nigerian Air Force, where he rose to become Chief of Air Staff, and his contributions to Kano, including the upgrade of the Nigerian Air Force Base in Kano and the establishment of the Nigerian Air Force Secondary School in Kwa, Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area.

Sanusi also referenced Dikko-Umar’s experience in security, leadership, and national service, and urged him to uphold the legacy of service of his father for the benefit of the people and the Dambazawa family. He charged him to continue deploying his knowledge for the advancement of the emirate and Kano State.

On Balarabe-Mahmoud, the emir said the title of Garkuwan Kano was in recognition of his contributions to the legal profession, commitment to human rights, and support to those in need. Sanusi noted his service as Kano State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, his tenure as President of the Nigerian Bar Association, and his role in defending the emirate’s interests at critical moments.

He described the title as one of protection and said Balarabe-Mahmoud had demonstrated commitment to justice, truth, and fairness. The emir urged him to remain steadfast in defending truth and justice, and to work toward unity within the Dambazawa family to support the dignity and development of the traditional institution.

The event was attended by Obasanjo and other dignitaries.
