Portable drinking water has been restored to Danbatta, Makoda, and Minjibir in the Kano North Senatorial District after a decade-long acute shortage.

Commissioner for Water Resources, Alhaji Umar Haruna Doguwa, made this announcement during a tour of the three local government areas to assess the water supply to communities.

According to Doguwa, the restoration of water supply is part of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s commitment to providing clean drinking water to all parts of Kano State.

He said small water treatment plants in semi-urban centers have been fully rehabilitated, and water supply has commenced in earnest.

He explained that water is now available in Kunya village and Wailari, both in Minjibir Local Government Area.

The Commissioner said efforts are underway to ensure portable drinking water is supplied to Danbatta Local Government.

Doguwa noted that the villages had been without water for over eight years, despite having pipe-borne connections, due to the negligence of the past administration, which led to the deterioration of the water treatment plants.

Inspections are ongoing to rectify pipes damaged by rust and other issues from years of non-use.

Doguwa emphasized that these efforts demonstrate Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s commitment to revitalizing the provision of clean drinking water to the state’s population.

The commissioner stated that water supply to Danbatta will be fully restored within the next week, pending the resolution of a technical issue with a blocked water valve along the Danbatta Thomas Dam.

Commissioner Doguwa’s warning is clear: the government will take action against individuals diverting water meant for human consumption to irrigation purposes.

To address this issue, concrete measures are being implemented to identify and prevent water diversion for irrigation farming ¹.

The government’s efforts aim to ensure that water is used efficiently and for its intended purpose.

This is crucial, especially in areas where water scarcity is a significant concern. By taking action against those diverting water, the government hopes to maintain a stable water supply for human consumption.

It’s worth noting that irrigation systems can have significant environmental impacts, such as salinization and waterlogging. Therefore, it’s essential to implement sustainable irrigation practices that balance agricultural needs with environmental concerns ¹.
