Equally important is the need for a nationwide public awareness campaign, educating citizens on the dangers of approaching petroleum tankers involved in accidents. Too often, individuals put their lives at risk by attempting to collect spilled fuel, unaware of the deadly consequences. States should erect billboards showing the aftermath of such incidents to discourage these dangerous actions.

With the increasing number of petroleum trucks on our roads, proactive safety measures could prevent future tragedies of this scale.
