Alhassan Doguwa, the member representing Tudun Wada/Doguwa Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has called on the Federal Government and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to immediately revert to the old pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol.
The recent fuel price hike has sparked widespread discontent, with Nigerians expressing frustration over the rising cost of living, particularly transportation. Fuel scarcity has worsened, with long queues forming in major cities and black marketers selling petrol at exorbitant prices of up to ₦1,500 per liter.
In Abuja and Lagos, petrol is selling for ₦880 at NNPCL mega filling stations, while independent marketers charge between ₦950 and ₦970 per liter.
Doguwa, who chairs the House Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream), described the situation as unacceptable, stating that private companies are exploiting gaps in the system to make arbitrary profits at the expense of Nigerians.
The lawmaker urged the federal government and NNPCL to suspend the recent price increase, citing the need to alleviate the burden on citizens.
He also pledged the committee’s readiness to address revenue losses due to crude oil theft and vandalism of pipelines.
The lawmaker advised Nigerians to give the President Tinubu-led government a chance to reposition the oil and gas sector.
