Kano, Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has signed the Kano State Emirate Council Establishment Bill 2024 into law, a move aimed at preserving the state’s cultural heritage.
The law establishes second-class emirate councils in Rano, Gaya, and Karaye, which will be supported by the existing Kano Emirate Council headed by a first-class emir.
The new emirate councils will have powers to advise the Emir of Kano on matters relating to public order and boundary disputes within their areas of jurisdiction.
Governor Yusuf emphasized the importance of the law in sustaining the rich cultural values and norms of the people of Kano State, and bridging the gap between the grassroots and the government.
The names of the new second-class Emirs will be announced later.
The development is expected to have a positive impact on the governance structure of Kano State.
