Kano, Gov. Abba Kabiru Yusuf of Kano State has launched a groundbreaking initiative to empower women across the state, disbursing N50,000 each to 5,200 women in all 44 Local Government areas.
The News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN) reports that the monthly grant, totaling N260 million, aims to support small-scale businesses and uplift the economic status of women, acknowledging the significant burden they carry in their families.
The program, coordinated by the Community Re-orientation Committee (CRC), targets 100 women from each of the 36 rural Local Governments and 200 women from the 8 metropolitan LGAs.
Yusuf emphasized that this initiative is a payback to women for their overwhelming support during the 2023 elections, fulfilling his promise to make them self-reliant and support their health and well-being.
The grant is intended to fund small-scale businesses such as awara, gireba, koko da kosai, local juices, and kuli-kuli.
Additionally, the state government has renovated and upgraded hospitals, particularly maternity and pediatric units, to ease the suffering of women and children.
Beneficiaries have expressed gratitude for the initiative, with Malama Rabbi Musa from Doguwa LGA praising Yusuf’s political commitment to empowering women.
Malama Habiba Abubakar from Tudun Wada LGA noted that the assistance will enhance small-scale businesses at the grassroots level, and beneficiaries are indebted to the governor for this wonderful empowerment exercise.
