Kano, Nov.A Chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Kano State,Alhaji Musa Abdullahi, has strongly condemned last Friday’s Appeal Court judgement that sacked Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State, describing it as a threat to democracy.
Abdullahi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Monday that judgement posed a great threat to the nation nascent democracy.
The Appellate Court had upheld the verdict of the Kano governorship election tribunal which upturned Governor Yusuf’s victory at the polls and pronounced the candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, the rightful winner of the March 18 governorship election.
He explained that the Appeal Court was wrong to have annulled the election of Governor Yusuf.
” Our people massively voted Gov Yusuf along with 27 members of the state assembly, two senators and about 11 members of the house of Representatives.
” For someone in Abuja to sit down and annulled people’s mandates would not be tolerated.
We are law abiding citizens battle ready to defend our nascent democracy through promoting political peace and tolerance.
We are heading to supreme court to seek judgement and depends our mandate from desperate politicians who want to snatch our mandate through back down.
According to him, the Appeal Court verdict was a calculated attempt to rob Kano people who massively voted for Governor Yusuf at the polls.
“The judges at the Appellate court did not do their homework before delivering the judgement. They have betrayed the fact that the judiciary is the last hope of the common man.
” They have threatened democracy, and we believe that they acted the script of some politicians in Abuja who are hell-bent on collecting power by force.
” As you can see, the people are not happy because our mandate is being stolen. They want Kano to remain in the hands of corrupt politicians who diverted the resources of the state to their private pockets,” he alleged.
The NNPP chieftain, however, expressed optimism that the Supreme Court would correct the “mistakes” made by the tribunal and the Appellate court.
” We have already appealed the judgement, and we are hopeful that the Supreme Court will restore the mandate of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
“Our members have remained calm even in the face of this injustice and daylight robbery by the tribunal and the Appeal Court,” he added.
