Kano ,The Kano State Urban Planning and Development Authority(KNUPDA), said Kofar Mata Id prayer will be ready before the forthcoming Id-el-Kabir festival.

The Managing Director of the authority,Arch. Ibrahim Yakubu, disclosed this to newsmen at the site of the demolition exercise,Kofar Mata,Kano,on Thursday.

” The legendary Kofar Mata Id prayer ground will be cleared of the debris which accumulated as a result of the ongoing demolition of illegal structures”,he said.

Yakubu assured that all the debris produced by the demolition of shops and other illegal structures around the area would give way for the forthcoming Id prayers at the ground.

He said equipment being used for demolition of illegal structures in other parts of the state capital would be mobilised to the Id ground in order to fast track the clearing exercise.

“The 500-year-old Id ground will have all the debris in it cleared before the Id-el-Kabir so that it will be ready for the Id prayers,” he said.

He also disclosed that more than 100 scavengers had been arrested by the police for removing such building materials as rods, doors and windows from the demolished structures.

He urged parents and guardians in the area to prevail on their children and wards to desist from illegally picking items from the demolished buildings as government would not tolerate such unwholesome acts.

Arch.Ibrahim Yakubu said the demolition exercise would continue as planned,as government had the responsibility to rid the state of illegal structures so as to restore sanity to the state.

Meanwhile the ongoing demolition of structures deemed illegal by the State Government has so far attracted widespread reactions both from within and outside the state.

While some people condemn the government action as insensitive to the feelings of the victims, others applaud it as a necessary policy to deter others from acquiring lands and erecting structures illegally.
