GOV. YUSUF MOURNS NAFIU BABA-AHMED, SECRETARY-GENERAL OF SUPREME COUNCIL FOR SHARIAH IN NIGERIA

Kano, Oct. 6, 2026, Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano State has expressed deep sadness over the death of Mallam Nafiu Baba-Ahmed, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria, describing his passing as a great loss to the Muslim Ummah, the nation and humanity.

This was contained in a condolence message issued by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, in Kano on Tuesday.

Gov. Yusuf said the death of Mallam Baba-Ahmed had deprived Nigeria of a distinguished lawyer, financial expert, Islamic affairs advocate and respected public intellectual who devoted decades of his life to the promotion of justice, good governance, religious understanding and welfare of society.

The governor particularly acknowledged his longstanding service as Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria, where he provided committed leadership and a strong voice on matters concerning Islam, constitutional rights, justice and national development.

Gov. Yusuf also commended the late Baba-Ahmed’s remarkable professional career in the legal and financial sectors, including his service at the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation and his contributions to the development of Islamic finance in Nigeria.

He noted that his combination of professional competence, integrity and commitment to public service made him a respected figure whose contributions transcended religious and professional boundaries.

He said the deceased would be remembered for his courage, intellectual depth, humility and tireless commitment to the values of justice, fairness and service to humanity.

Gov. Yusuf, on behalf of the government and people of Kano State, extended heartfelt condolences to the family of Mallam Nafiu Baba-Ahmed, the leadership and members of the Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria, the people of Kaduna State and the wider Muslim community, urging them to take solace in his enduring legacy and positive impact he made during his lifetime.

He prayed Allah (SWT) to forgive the deceased’s shortcomings, reward his good deeds abundantly and grant him Aljannatul Firdausi, while granting his family, colleagues and all those affected by his death the strength and fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
