2027: Gov. Yusuf Approached Tinubu Over Defection Plan With Kwankwaso’s Consent – Sanusi Bature

By Aminu Garko

The Director General, Media and Publicity, Government House Kano, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, has said that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf approached President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over a planned defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) with the consent of Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

Speaking on Arise TV’s Morning Show, Bature said the move also had the backing of former Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo. He said the discussions were part of wider behind-the-scenes engagements ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to him, Governor Yusuf accepted President Tinubu’s invitation to join the APC as a way to address what he described as the political miscalculation of Kwankwaso aligning with a pro-Biafra group.

Kwankwaso Allegedly Working for Tinubu’s Re-election in Disguise
Bature alleged that former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is indirectly working toward President Tinubu’s re-election in 2027. He said certain political alignments and interactions suggest subtle cooperation between opposing blocs, though he stressed this was part of prevailing political discourse rather than confirmed fact.

He added that political activities ahead of 2027 are already generating competing narratives nationwide.

Peter Obi Will Not Be Accepted in Kano
Bature stated that former presidential candidate Peter Obi may face political limitations in Kano State due to what he described as the conservative nature of the state’s political environment.

He argued that political acceptance in Kano is shaped by long-standing ideological and regional considerations that could influence voter perception in 2027.

Alleged Political Movements Between Abeokuta and Ibadan
The Kano government spokesperson also alleged that individuals perceived as opposing a Yoruba presidency are holding consultations and strategic meetings between major South-West cities such as Abeokuta and Ibadan.

He claimed they are presenting Kwankwaso as a politician who abandoned his ideology for self-interest. Bature said such engagements are part of broader national maneuvering ahead of 2027, which he believes will ultimately favor President Tinubu, as Kwankwaso has “thrown the opposition into disarray.”

Disputed Claim of 5 Million Crowd at Kwankwaso Residence
Bature questioned claims that about 5 million supporters attended a political gathering at Kwankwaso’s residence, describing the figures as exaggerated and unrealistic.

He said even major public venues in Kano, such as the Sani Abacha Stadium, have a capacity of about 16,000 people. He argued that Kwankwaso’s residence cannot accommodate more than 2,000 people and that such figures are often used to project political strength during election cycles.

Claim That Biafra Advocacy Cannot Be Accepted in Kano Politics
Bature further stated that Kano remains a conservative political environment and suggested that individuals associated with Biafra advocacy may struggle to gain acceptance within the state’s mainstream political structure.

He linked this to broader national sensitivities and ideological divisions shaping political discourse across regions.

According to him, Kwankwaso and Obi have mutual political animosity, and people with divergent views and ideologies cannot work together to win elections and govern a complex country like Nigeria.
