KNSG inaugurates LOC for UNESCO world heritage volunteers programme

Kaon, The Kano State Government has inaugurated the Local Organising Committee for the UNESCO World Heritage Volunteers (WHV) Programme 2025.

The  landmark initiative was aimed at promoting cultural preservation, youth engagement, and sustainable development.

This is contained in a statement issued by Press Secretary,Musa Tanko, Office of the Secretary to the State Government, on Friday in Kano.

Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Umar Ibrahim,  Gov. Abba  Yusuf emphasised the state’s commitment to preserving cultural heritage.

He commended UNESCO for its collaboration with member states, saying the programme aligned with the state’s vision to promote culture, heritage, and tourism.

“The Kano State Government remains committed to driving growth, particularly in preserving and promoting cultural heritage,” Yusuf stated.

Through the initiative, Kano seeks to position itself as a beacon of history, culture, and creativity in Nigeria and Africa.

Earlier, the Programme Director, UNESCO WHV Nigeria 2025, Malame  Mangzha, commended Kano State for its leading role in safeguarding Africa’s cultural assets.

Mangzha stated that Kano holds a special place in preserving Africa’s cultural heritage, citing Kurmi Market, Dala Hills, and other archaeological sites as representations of Hausa civilization.

She said Kano’s vibrant traditions were testaments of resilience and identity, adding that the project will strengthen the state’s global cultural standing.

Mangzha explained that several national and international organisations were expected to partner in the programme, enhancing Kano’s status as a cultural hub and attracting investments.

According to her, the inauguration marked a national campaign to engage communities and stakeholders in heritage protection, aligning with UNESCO’s vision on culture, conservation, and youth empowerment.

Mangzha commended the Kano State Government for its warmth and hospitality.

The committee is chaired by Hajiya Aisha Lawan-Saji and comprises eminent personalities from government, academia, and cultural sectors.

The members include: Prof. Tijjani  Naniya, Special Adviser on Emirate Councils; Dr Bashir Muzakkari, Director-General, Kano State Information Technology Development Agency; and Abdul Zakirai, Permanent Secretary, Protocol Directorate, Government House.

Others are: Binta  Abdullahi, who serves as Secretary, with Jamilu Usman as Assistant Secretary II.

The UNESCO WHV Kano Programme 2025 aims to deepen cultural preservation awareness, promote sustainable tourism, and strengthen community participation in heritage protection, highlighting Kano’s reputation as a cradle of history and civilization.
