Sokoto emerges overall winners of UBEC Northwest sports competitions

Sokoto state athletes have emerged overall winners of this year’s UBEC Northwest sports competition for inter primary schools boys and girls.

The three days tournaments was held at Dutse, NYSC camp, Jigawa state attracted six states in attendance only Kebbi state contingent failed to show up.

The competition which is being organized by the national headquarter of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) in conjunction with the Nigerian School Sports Federation (NSSF) was designed to catch them young.

Sokoto won five gold, one silver to occupy the first position, Kano took the second position with one gold and two silver while Kaduna and Jigawa came third and fourth with one gold and one silver, Jigawa, one silver and two bronze.

Katsina and Zamfara took the fifth and sixth position with one silver and Zamfara failed to pick any medals.

The winners and runners up of the each events of football, basketball, volleyball and handball have qualified to represent the northwest in the national finals scheduled to hold later in the year in Abuja.

In the closing ceremony match played Kano defeated it’s Kaduna state counterpart by 1-0 in an interesting encounter to increased their gold medal.

Speaking shortly after the final match, the Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education commission, (UBEC), Hajia Aisha Garba has described the championship as part of it commitment to improve and develop various sporting activities at grassroot levels across the country..

Haji Aisha Garba who was represented by the deputy zonal Director of the commission in charge of Northwest, Mrs. Augustina Sanchi said the commission will continue to contribute play a vital role in complementing the President Bola Ahmad Tinubu’s efforts regarding sports development in the country.

While congratulating the winners for their victory, she urged the losers to redouble efforts in the future tournaments.

Some other dignitaries who spoke at the occasion have commended the leadership of UBEC under Hajia Aisha Garba for her foresight and commitment to the development of sports in the country.

Highlights of the event include presentation of trophies, medals and certificates to the deserving states.
