Transparency and Accountability in Kano State Government

The hallmark of exemplary leadership lies in the selflessness of a leader whose actions are guided by an unwavering commitment to honesty, transparency, and integrity.

It will be recalled that not long ago an Assistant Commissioner of Police Muhammadu Sunusi refused to collect a whopping amount of N100 million bribe from a criminal who wanted to evade justice but refused to do so on account of his impeccable honesty and integrity.

A recent development in Kano State highlights these qualities when: the Commissioner for Local Governments, Alhaji Tajo Othman, returned ₦100 million to the state treasury as savings from an official event. This remarkable act of honesty has garnered widespread commendation and underscores the impeccable integrity of the Commissioner.

Alhaji Tajo Othman’s background speaks volumes about his track record. As a former Customs officer and seasoned public servant, he has demonstrated an unblemished and incorruptible career in service to his country. His actions reflect the leadership qualities of his principal, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, whose administration prioritizes transparency and accountability in all aspects of governance.

The trust reposed in Alhaji Tajo Othman by the Governor is evident in his strategic appointment to the Ministry of Local Governments, a ministry previously overseen by the Deputy Governor. This critical role highlights his competence and the Governor’s confidence in his ability to manage the ministry’s strategic importance, particularly in maintaining a firm grip on the party structure within the state.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s decision to reshuffle his cabinet demonstrates his commitment to effective governance. The cabinet reshuffle was driven by the desire to position the right individuals in key roles to ensure the successful implementation of government policies. Alhaji Tajo Othman’s appointment exemplifies the principle of putting square pegs in square holes. His leadership is expected to reengineer the ministry to deliver on policies that will positively impact the lives of citizens across the 44 local governments in Kano State.

The Commissioner has already indicated his ministry’s readiness to revive the textile and garment industry, a sector under its purview. This initiative aims to create job opportunities for the state’s teeming unemployed youth and generate wealth for the population. Such a proactive approach is expected to address youth restiveness and mitigate the security challenges faced by some communities in the state.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration remains steadfast in its commitment to fulfilling its promises to the electorate. By focusing on transparency, accountability, and strategic leadership, the Kano State Government is poised to deliver impactful policies and programs that will improve the lives of its citizens.
