KNSG to Prosecute Tax Defaulters, Targets N80 Billion Revenue in 2025

The Kano State Government has announced plans to prosecute tax defaulters in 2025, as part of its efforts to reform tax administration and increase revenue generation. According to Dr. Zaid Abubakar, Executive Chairman of the Kano State Internal Revenue Service (KIRS), the government aims to generate over N20 billion in revenue each quarter of 2025, totaling N80 billion for the year.
The government’s decision to prosecute tax defaulters is not intended to increase taxes, but rather to improve tax collection efficiency and ensure compliance with tax regulations.
This move is part of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s efforts to fulfill his campaign promises and drive development in critical sectors.
Recent actions by the government, such as relieving the immediate past chairman of the revenue service and appointing a new management structure, have already shown positive results, with significant improvements in the agency’s performance in the third and fourth quarters of 2024.
To further enhance revenue generation, the Governor will commission a new tax collection model, expected to substantially increase revenue in 2025. This move is seen as a crucial step towards achieving the government’s revenue targets and driving development in Kano State.
