Kano State Governor’s Relentless Efforts to Revamp Education Sector Yield Positive Results

By Aminu Garko

Kano State’s education sector has faced numerous challenges over the years, but Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has taken bold steps to address these issues. In a bid to salvage the sector from total collapse, the governor declared a state of emergency, focusing on providing instructional materials, furniture, and constructing new classrooms across the state’s three geo-political zones.

Despite these efforts, some schools still grapple with significant challenges. Tudun Wada Model Primary School, for instance, has 1,226 pupils with only 19 teachers. The school’s Assistant Headmaster, Malam Kabir Alhassan, highlighted the shortage of personnel, lack of security, and non-availability of toilets as major concerns ¹.

On a positive note, the school has benefited from the government’s efforts, with a new block of classrooms completed. Malam Kabir praised the administration for promoting teachers, paying salaries on time, and implementing the minimum wage, boosting staff morale.

However, not all schools share the same experience. Government Junior Secondary School Rufa’i Tudun Wada is situated near a gully eroded site, posing a significant risk to pupils. The school has only eight teachers, and a new block of classrooms is still under construction.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s efforts to revamp the education sector have earned him recognition. The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has conferred an honorary award on him for his exceptional performance in reforming the sector ². The governor has also demonstrated his commitment to improving educational infrastructure, donating 1,000 desks to Governor’s College, Kano ³.

While progress has been made, more needs to be done to address the lingering challenges facing schools like Tudun Wada Model Primary School and Government Junior Secondary School Rufa’i Tudun Wada. With sustained commitment and investment, Kano State’s education sector can be transformed, providing a brighter future for its citizens.
