A Stitch in Time: The Agricultural Transformation of Jigawa State

Jigawa State, blessed with vast expanses of arable land, stands as one of Nigeria’s foremost agricultural regions. With favorable conditions for both rainy and dry season farming, the state’s potential for agricultural success is immense. The River Hadejia, flowing from Tiga Dam in Kano State through Jigawa and terminating in Jama’are, Bauchi State, offers a natural resource base for efficient agricultural development and utilization.

Under the leadership of Governor Umar Namadi, Jigawa State has prioritized agriculture as a cornerstone of economic growth. This administration’s proactive approach and unwavering support for farmers demonstrate a clear commitment to transforming the state’s agricultural landscape. By harnessing the Allah-given resources at its disposal, Jigawa is poised to become a hub for agro-allied industries.

Modernizing Agriculture

The Namadi administration has embarked on a comprehensive shift from traditional farming methods to mechanized agriculture. This transformation aims to boost productivity and ensure higher yields with minimal input. One of the administration’s notable achievements is the provision of free fertilizer to verified farmers—those who can demonstrate active farming activities.

Additionally, farmers have received access to tractors for harrowing and harvesting at subsidized rates. Extension services reminiscent of the “Baban Larai” era have also been revived, offering valuable support and guidance to the farming community.

To further enhance mechanization efforts, the government sponsored 30 agricultural staff to China for specialized training in the operation and maintenance of newly acquired tractors. This initiative underscores the administration’s determination to leave no stone unturned in its quest to make Jigawa a leading agricultural state.

Focus on Cash Crops and Industrialization

The state government has identified key cash crops such as soybeans, groundnuts, sesame seeds, gum arabic, and dates as critical drivers for industrialization. These crops, with their high market value, hold the potential to attract investment and spur the growth of agro-based industries.

Governor Namadi’s administration also recognizes the need to revive previously privatized but now defunct industries, including the Sugar Industry in Hadejia, the Flour Mill in Gumel, the Tomato Puree Factory in Kazaure, and the Dairy Milk Processing Plant in Birnin Kudu. By negotiating buy-back arrangements or seeking new investors through the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC), the government aims to breathe new life into these industries.

Economic Diversification and Industrial Ambitions

The recent debates surrounding the Value Added Tax (VAT) sharing formula highlight the urgency for Jigawa State to diversify its economy. Increasing industrial output will not only boost the state’s revenue but also secure its rightful place in national economic discussions.

Governor Namadi’s ambitious wheat production program is another strategic initiative aimed at reducing Nigeria’s reliance on imported wheat. By achieving self-sufficiency in wheat production, Jigawa can contribute significantly to the country’s food security and save valuable foreign exchange.

Vision for the Future

With plans for an export processing zone, a cargo airport, and an extensive rail network, Jigawa State is well-positioned to become a regional industrial hub. Its vast agricultural resources provide a solid foundation for agro-industrial development, aligning with the state’s motto, “The New World.”

Governor Umar Namadi’s visionary leadership and dedication to agricultural transformation have set Jigawa State on a path to greatness. His efforts deserve commendation and a special place in the annals of the state’s history. As the saying goes, “A stitch in time saves nine.” With timely interventions and strategic planning, Jigawa’s future generations will reap the benefits of today’s initiatives.
