Kano,The Kano State Executive Council has approved the conversion of Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education to Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, Kumbotso, while retaining its degree-awarding status.

The decision was taken at the council’s 18th sitting held on Sept.18, “following an extensive stakeholder consultations and recommendations of a high-powered committee.”

The council said the committee’s findings “highlighted concerns about the potential negative impact of transitioning to university status.”

These, the council said, include risk of losing experienced lecturers,salary-related conflicts and administrative challenges hindering operational efficiency.

These concerns it said, were particularly significant given the college’s strategic location and access, serving students from non-metropolitan areas.

The council said the conversion is expected to have no adverse effects on students, with current undergraduates continuing their studies uninterrupted.

It said the university’s certificate would be preserved for future use, and the institution would offer both traditional courses and additional degree programmes under its expanded academic mandate.

Following this development, Gov. Abba Yusuf had approved the dissolution of the university management with immediate effect.

The Vice Chancellor had also been directed to hand over affairs of the institution to his most senior Deputy, pending further announcements.

“This strategic decision underscores the Kano State Government’s commitment to ensuring stability and growth in its higher education institutions while addressing stakeholder concerns to maintain academic excellence and operational efficiency,” the council added.
