Governor Yusuf Constitutes Panel to Investigate Violent Protest in Kano

Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, of Kano State has inaugurated a 14-member Judicial Commission of Inquiry (JCI) to investigate the violent protest that occurred in Kano, resulting in killings, looting, and destruction of properties.
The panel, led by retired Justice Lawan Wada Mahmoud, is tasked with unraveling the perpetrators and sponsors of the destruction.
The Governor challenged the panel to investigate the missing documents at the high court complex, including criminal files and looting exhibits. He directed the commission to invite anyone found wanting, regardless of status or position, to answer questions.
The terms of reference for the commission include:
- Investigating the remote and immediate causes of the destruction
- Identifying individuals and groups responsible for the unrest
- Ascertaining the extent of damage and loss of lives and valuables
- Recommending ways to avoid future occurrences
The commission is guided by the provisions of Section 8 of the Kano State Commission of Inquiry Law, Cap 36, Laws of Kano State of Nigeria, 2018.
Other members of the panel include Barrister Tajuddeen Funsho, Alhaji Sani Isa Asia, Prof. Musa Muhammad Borodo, and others.
Chairman Justice Lawan Wada Mahmoud promised to conduct the assignment to the best of their ability without fear or favor.
