GOV.Abba Yusuf: A Friend of Pensioners

By Mahmud Shauibu Rimgim
At the start of his administration, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has taken decisive action to alleviate the hardships faced by pensioners in the state.
The previous administration left a significant pension liability, with unpaid pensions and gratuities. This included a 25% deduction from pensioners’ monthly payments and an extension of the retirement age from 60 to 65 without a corresponding increase in pension or gratuity entitlements. Consequently, the payment of gratuities was delayed by five years, exacerbating the financial and emotional challenges faced by pensioners.
Retirement often brings emotional, financial, and physical challenges. Emotionally, retirees may struggle with a loss of productivity and purpose. Financially, they may face difficulties in managing family expenses, such as school fees and rent. Physically, the abrupt transition to a less active lifestyle can lead to a decline in overall well-being.
The prompt payment of gratuities is crucial as it can provide retirees with the capital needed to start a new business or settle outstanding debts. Without this support, retirees may face financial hardship and diminished dignity.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s efforts to improve the lives of pensioners have earned him recognition from the National Association of Pensioners of Nigeria. His administration has stopped the 25% pension deduction, reverted the retirement age to 60, and begun clearing the backlog of unpaid gratuities. Priority has also been given to the families of deceased pensioners, providing them with much-needed financial relief.
Under his leadership, 1,291 pensioners and 1,440 local government pensioners received their gratuities, along with 355 families of deceased civil servants and 633 families of deceased local government employees. Governor Yusuf inherited N43 billion in unpaid gratuities and has already cleared N11 billion within three months. He has pledged to clear the remaining N32 billion during his first term and ensure timely payment of gratuities in his second term.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has shown exceptional compassion and leadership, earning the title of “Friend of Pensioners.” His actions reflect his deep commitment to supporting those who have dedicated their lives to public service.
