By Aminu Garko

Kano, The Kano State Government has embarked on a comprehensive agricultural program aimed at revitalizing the state’s farming industry.

The initiative includes the decilitation of 20 abundant dams and the clearance of 1,299 hectares of irrigation farming land at Dansoshiya Bush.

This effort seeks to restore Kano’s former status as a major agricultural hub in Nigeria.

According to Dr. Danjuma Muhmoud, the State Commissioner for Agriculture, on Tuesday said that already the state  government has distributed 52 trucks of fertilizer to the 44 local government areas, with an additional 180 trucks purchased from the state-owned KASCO at subsidized rates.

The federal government has also provided MPK and Urea fertilizers, which will be distributed to farmers through a committee comprising traditional, religious, and law enforcement stakeholders.

The government has spent N1.2 billion on the initial 52 trucks of fertilizer and N5 billion on the additional 180 trucks.

Furthermore, 440 extension workers have been trained and dispatched to local governments to educate farmers on improved seeds and farming implements.

The state government has also begun massive clearance of farming lands, aiming to achieve 80% clearance by December 2024.

Additionally, the government is collaborating with China to acquire new farming implements for irrigation and constructing rural roads for the evacuation of produced crops.

The ultimate goal is to establish a “produce and evacuate” farming system, ensuring a bumper harvest and curbing hunger and starvation in the state.
