Kano, Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano State has reaffirmed his administration’s determination to set up a Polytechnic in Gaya Local Government Area.

This is with the view to expanding technical and vocational education in line with the state’s manpower development agenda.

This is contained in a statement issued by his spokesperson Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa in Kano on Thursday.

Yusuf said the polytechnic would strengthen skills acquisition and innovation, provide quality education and practical training for youths in Gaya and neighbouring communities.

According to him, it will also serve as a centre for artisans to upgrade their abilities and obtain formal qualifications.

He pledged that all necessary arrangements would be completed for a swift take‑off, expressing confidence that the institution will create jobs, stimulate business, reduce rural‑urban migration and promote inclusive development.

Meanwhile, Yusuf said the state would undertake a total rehabilitation of the Kano State College of Education and Preliminary Studies (KASCEPS) to upgrade its academic and infrastructural facilities.

The announcement came during an unscheduled visit to the college on Thursday, accompanied by his Deputy, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly and other senior officials.

He said the visit was to assess the institution’s condition and plan restoration works.

The planned works include the renovation of classrooms, the auditorium, laboratories and other critical facilities, as well as possible expansion of hostels for boarding students.

Yusuf urged the students to pursue academic excellence and take advantage of the state’s foreign and domestic scholarship schemes.

The Deputy Governor and Commissioner for Higher Education,  Aminu  Gwarzo, said that the Executive Council had approved N270 million for the completion and furnishing of the college’s e‑library.

The Provost, Dr Auwal Faruk, guided the governor’s entourage through the campus to identify urgent needs.
