Kano Govt Seeks Partnership to Modernize Correctional Facilities

By Aminu Garko

Abuja, The Kano State Government has expressed concern over the deplorable state of the Kurmawa Correctional Centre and has proposed a collaborative framework with the Federal Government to modernize the facility.

The State Government’s delegation, led by the Commissioner for Internal Security, Air Vice Marshal Ibrahim Umaru (rtd), made the proposal during a visit to the Nigerian Correctional Service Headquarters in Abuja. The team also included the Commissioner for Special Duties, Alhaji Nasiru Sule Garo, and other top officials.

The delegation noted that the Kurmawa facility is grossly overstretched, overcrowded, and no longer suitable for use, posing severe risks. They proposed the completion and commissioning of the modern Janguza Correctional Centre and the conversion of the old Kurmawa facility into a skill acquisition centre and museum.

The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Correctional Service, Mr. Sylvester Ndidi N., commended the Kano State Government for its proactive interventions in the correctional sector, describing Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf as a leader held in high esteem. He assured that the Service would discuss the proposal with the Minister of Interior for further action.
