Kano State Government Takes Ownership of Trachoma Trichiasis Project

Kano, The Kano State Government has pledged to eradicate Trachoma disease in the state, taking ownership of the Trachoma Trichiasis project. Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran, made this commitment during a formal handover ceremony in Kano.

The project, previously supported by the Health and Development Support Program (HANDS), has achieved significant milestones, including:

  • Training of healthcare workers and management of Trachoma Trichiasis cases
  • Conduct of Mass Drug Administration campaigns in ten local government areas
  • Training of Community Directed Distributors and Case Finders
  • Active house-to-house case search across the state
  • Rehabilitation of boreholes and construction of new ones

Dr. Labaran commended the efforts of HANDS and SIGHTSAVERS International, praising Governor Abba Yusuf’s dedication and commitment. He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to controlling and eliminating Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs).

Country Director of SIGHTSAVERS Nigeria, Dr. Joy Shuiabu, pledged continued support to the Kano state government in eliminating Trachoma Trichiasis. She urged other states to emulate Kano’s lead in the fight against the disease.

Dr. Innocent Emereuwa, Director of Programs at Health and Development Support, lauded the Kano State Government for its achievements in combating Trachoma Trichiasis.
