Kano, The 6th Regional Parliament Meeting of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament is being held in Kano to bring lawmakers closer to the people and foster greater understanding.
According to the First Deputy Speaker, Senator Barau Jibrin, the meeting aims to bridge the gap between parliamentarians and the grassroots, enabling them to better serve their constituents.
The ECOWAS Parliament, also known as the Community Parliament, is a forum for dialogue, consultation, and consensus among representatives of West African people, promoting integration and development.
This meeting, attended by 115 members from various states, except Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, will discuss critical issues affecting the region.
Senator Jibrin emphasized that each member state has a guaranteed minimum of 5 seats, with additional seats allocated based on population size, ensuring Nigeria has the highest representation.
The meeting will feature open sessions for parliamentarians and invited guests to discuss various topics, including economy, society, and ECOWAS affairs, without restrictions.
This historic meeting in Kano marks a first for the city, chosen for its strategic location as the commercial and political hub of northern Nigeria. By bringing ECOWAS Parliament to Kano, the aim is to increase awareness and understanding among the people and parliamentarians, fostering closer ties and more effective representation.
